Volkswagen ID. Polo Revealed: All-Electric Supermini Promises Up to 282 Miles of Range

Volkswagen has pulled the covers off the all-new ID. Polo, the fully electric reinterpretation of one of the best-selling cars in its history. Unveiled on 29 April 2026, the ID. Polo signals a new chapter for a nameplate that has shifted more than 20 million units worldwide, bringing battery power, modern technology and a roomier cabin to the supermini class.

Pre-sales of the ID. Polo opened in Germany on launch day, with UK prices, specification and on-sale timings due to be confirmed by Volkswagen UK in the coming months.

ID. Polo design: a familiar name with a brand-new look

The ID. Polo is the first production Volkswagen to wear the brand's new "Pure Positive" design language, led by Chief Designer Andreas Mindt. It is a clean, deliberately timeless look, with a friendly front end, powerful rear shoulders and a distinctive C-pillar inspired by the original Mk1 Golf. New light signatures front and back mark it out as a member of the latest ID. family while keeping the silhouette unmistakably Polo.

It is also a more practical proposition than its predecessor. The ID. Polo measures 4,053 mm long, 1,816 mm wide and 1,530 mm high, riding on a 2,600 mm wheelbase. Sitting on the upgraded MEB+ platform, it offers space for five and a 441-litre boot — 25% more than the petrol Polo's 351 litres. Drop the rear seats and luggage capacity rises to 1,240 litres.

ID. Polo range, power and charging

The Volkswagen ID. Polo will be offered in three power outputs and two battery sizes. The entry-level model uses an 85 kW (114 bhp) front-mounted motor, with a 99 kW (133 bhp) version sitting in the middle. Both pair with a 37 kWh (net) lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, good for a WLTP range of up to 204 miles. A 10–80% top-up takes around 23 minutes on a DC rapid charger.

Topping the line-up at launch is the 155 kW (208 bhp) ID. Polo, which uses a 52 kWh (net) NMC battery for a WLTP range of up to 282 miles. DC charging from 10–80% takes about 24 minutes. Combined power consumption for this version is quoted at 13.3–14.6 kWh per 100 km. DC quick charging is standard across the range, with the entry-level Trend trim including a 90 kW DC capability.

One-pedal driving comes as standard, and every ID. Polo gets a vehicle-to-load function that allows the car to act as a mobile power source, supplying up to 3.6 kW to e-bikes, camping kit or other devices via either an interior 230V socket or a separate adapter on the charging port.

ID. Polo interior: a premium-feeling cabin and clever new tech

Step inside and the ID. Polo borrows ideas from much pricier Volkswagens. Drivers face a 10-inch Digital Cockpit and a 13-inch Innovision touchscreen mounted high on the dashboard, alongside physical buttons — a welcome return for owners who do not want to dig through menus for everyday functions. Decorative stitching, soft-touch materials and discreet "Volkswagen" badges in the door trims give the cabin a quality feel.

A new "retro display" mode adds a knowing nod to the Mk1 Golf facelift for the digital instruments, while ID. Polo Style models get an upgraded ID. Light strip that, for the first time, extends into the front doors and can warn occupants of an approaching cyclist or vehicle before they open the door.

The optional kit list reads more like a family hatchback than a supermini, including a Harman Kardon sound system with 425W output and 10 speakers, a panoramic glass roof, a memory function on the electrically adjustable driver's seat and 12-way front seats with a pneumatic three-programme massage function.

The headline tech feature is Connected Travel Assist with automatic traffic light recognition, a class-first that lets the assisted driving system respond to traffic signals as well as helping with steering and speed (within the system's limits, with the driver remaining responsible).

Three trims: ID. Polo Trend, Life and Style

In Germany, the ID. Polo will be sold in three equipment lines. Trend is the entry-level grade, with 90 kW DC rapid charging, LED headlights, the 10-inch Digital Cockpit, the 13-inch Innovision system, automatic air conditioning, Side Assist, Lane Assist and Emergency Assist all standard.

The mid-spec ID. Polo Life adds adaptive cruise control, a rear-view camera, front parking sensors, front cross-traffic assist, voice control, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto via App Connect, inductive smartphone charging, an auto-dimming interior mirror, electrically folding mirrors with memory and a variable-height boot floor.

Top-spec Style brings IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights, an illuminated LED light strip across the nose, 3D LED tail-lights, illuminated VW logos front and rear, sport-comfort seats, ambient lighting, heated front seats and steering wheel, and dual-zone climate control.
