There's always a bit of nervousness when a brand goes electric with a car that people love for reasons that have nothing to do with a drivetrain. Range Rover isn't bought because it's fast off the line or because it sips fuel efficiently. It's bought because it's quiet, composed, and makes everything outside the cabin feel like someone else's problem. So the question everyone in the industry has been asking for years was simple: could Range Rover build an EV that still feels like a Range Rover?
Having gone through the detail on the new Range Rover Electric, the answer looks like a genuine yes.
What's actually changed (and what hasn't)
Range Rover has been careful here, and it shows. The design team hasn't tried to reinvent the silhouette to prove a point about aerodynamics. You get a reworked grille, new wheel designs and some underbody tweaks to smooth airflow, but the proportions and the presence are exactly what you'd expect if you parked it next to a petrol or diesel Range Rover. No awkward EV-specific styling exercise, no forced futurism. It still looks like it belongs outside a country house or a five-star hotel, which is presumably the point.
Built in Solihull, the same home Range Rover has had since 1970, this isn't a car built somewhere new to prove a fresh start. It's the next chapter of the same story.
The numbers that matter
This is where it gets genuinely impressive rather than just competent.
Under the floor sits a 118.5kWh battery running 800-volt architecture, and it's double-stacked, which is part of how Range Rover has managed to fit that much capacity in without compromising the cabin or load space. WLTP range comes in at up to 372 miles, with a real-world figure closer to 333 miles, which is refreshingly honest as far as EV range claims go.
Charging is quick when you need it to be. A 10-80% DC charge takes around 22 minutes, and at maximum rate you can add roughly 220km of range in just 10 minutes. There's also split-charging capability built in, giving a bit more flexibility depending on where and how you top up.
Performance is handled by twin 260kW motors producing a combined 550PS and 850Nm of torque, enough for 0-60mph in 4.3 seconds. For a car this size and this weight, that's proper pace. More interesting for anyone who actually uses a Range Rover as intended is the traction response time of 50 milliseconds, around 100 times faster than a combustion engine can react, plus the ability to wade through 900mm of water and climb 45-degree slopes. It hasn't lost any of its off-road credentials chasing efficiency figures.
Range Rover has also included a system called ThermAssist, which manages heat more intelligently across the car and is said to add around 25 miles of extra range in typical use, a small but sensible bit of engineering.
Inside the cabin
New Light Cloud Ultrafabrics PU and Kvadrat materials feature inside, alongside a cabin designed to feel like a sanctuary rather than a control room, with cabin purification and a heated steering wheel among the details. The Range Rover App ties in for remote vehicle management, so you can check charge status and cabin settings without needing to walk out to the car.
None of this is flashy for the sake of it. It's consistent with how Range Rover interiors have always been positioned: calm, considered, and built to be lived with rather than shown off.
The work behind the scenes
It's worth mentioning the scale of testing that's gone into this, because it explains a lot about why the car feels finished rather than rushed. Range Rover has put the Electric through more than 1.5 million kilometres of physical testing and over 250,000 hours of virtual testing, and filed more than 300 patent applications along the way, the most of any model in the brand's history. Martin Limpert, Managing Director at Range Rover, put it simply: electric propulsion suits the brand's whole approach to refinement, and if anything it elevates the sense of calm the cars are known for.
Pricing and availability
The Range Rover Electric is available to order now, with the EV550 Autobiography short-wheelbase starting from £154,070 OTR. It's not a car aimed at the mass market, and it was never going to be, but for existing Range Rover owners and anyone considering a move to electric without giving up the driving experience they're used to, it's a serious option.
