The Volkswagen Tayron is now on sale in the UK, and it's quickly establishing itself as one of the most practical and polished seven-seat SUVs in its class. Replacing the Tiguan AllSpace, the Tayron sits above the standard Tiguan in Volkswagen's lineup and competes directly with the Nissan X-Trail, Skoda Kodiaq, and Peugeot 5008. If you want VW quality with genuine seven-seat practicality, it makes a compelling case — scroll down to see our current lease deals, or read on for our full review.
Design and Exterior Features
The Tayron shares its styling DNA with the current Tiguan but carries a bolder, more substantial presence on the road. It's 10mm wider and 230mm longer than its sibling, giving it a confident silhouette — slim headlights, a full-width light bar across the bonnet, and a sporty roofline that sets it apart from the more upright profiles of rivals like the Hyundai Santa Fe. Alloy wheels range from 17 to 19 inches depending on trim, and the proportions feel well-judged for a large family SUV. At the rear, a full-width light assembly mirrors the Tiguan's but with its own LED signature to distinguish the two cars at a glance.
Interior and Technology
Inside, the Tayron impresses with a cabin that feels genuinely premium without being overcomplicated. The dashboard features a gloss-black panel with ambient lighting and a trim strip exclusive to the Tayron — available in several finishes including wood veneer for a more upscale feel. The standard 12.9-inch touchscreen can be upgraded to a 15-inch display, and a 10.25-inch digital driver's display comes as standard across the range. A multifunction rotary knob in the centre console handles volume, driving modes, and lighting, offering a welcome physical control in an otherwise screen-led environment.
Space is where the Tayron really earns its keep. As Volkswagen's second-largest SUV in Europe behind the Touareg, it offers 885 litres of boot space in five-seat configuration — comparable to the Skoda Kodiaq — reducing to 850 litres with the third row deployed. That's still more than most seven-seat rivals can manage. The middle row has enough seat travel to give genuine legroom for taller adults, and while the third row is best suited to children or shorter passengers, it's a proper seat rather than an afterthought.
Engines and Performance
The Tayron offers a broad engine lineup to suit different drivers and use cases. The entry point is a 1.5-litre mild-hybrid petrol (eTSI) producing 150hp — smooth and efficient for everyday driving. Step up and you'll find two 2.0-litre petrol variants producing 204hp and 265hp respectively, both with 4Motion all-wheel drive. For higher-mileage drivers, the 2.0-litre diesel is available in 150hp front-wheel drive or 193hp all-wheel drive trim, delivering the strongest real-world fuel economy in the range. Every engine is paired with a smooth automatic gearbox.
Plug-in hybrid variants pair a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol with an electric motor, offering either 204hp or 272hp and an electric-only range of around 62 miles — enough for most daily commutes. One important consideration for family buyers: PHEV models are available in five-seat configuration only. The battery pack occupies space beneath the boot floor, so if seven seats are non-negotiable, you'll need to opt for one of the petrol or diesel variants instead. It's worth factoring that into your decision early.
On safety, the Tayron earned a five-star Euro NCAP rating in 2025, scoring above 80% across all categories — reassuring for families.
Is the Volkswagen Tayron Worth Leasing?
For families who want the reassurance of a premium badge, genuine seven-seat flexibility, and a wide choice of powertrains, the Tayron is one of the strongest options in its class right now. It's spacious, well-equipped, and refined to drive — very much in the VW mould.
Leasing suits the Tayron particularly well. Rather than absorbing the depreciation of a large SUV purchase, leasing lets you fix your monthly costs, stay within the manufacturer's warranty for the full contract, and simply hand it back at the end — leaving you free to move on to whatever's next. It's a straightforward way to drive a car at this level without a large upfront outlay.
